Mobile Phones on
College Campus
Nowadays
many students and professors are reluctantly coming to terms with the increasing
popularity of mobile phones on college campus.
“Mobile users
account for over 40%of all students from a number of colleges surveyed in
Beijing while the number was 10%in 2001 according to a report by studies on
China’s Youth magazine
The report also
indicated that each mobile user on a college campus spends an average of 3000
yuan per year on the high technology with some spending as much as 5000
yuan.

However,the figures
may vary greatly between different grades and different
colleges.
Generally speaking,
students in higher grades buy more
mobiles because older students are more sensible to what is popular on
campus. Lower grade students are busy adapting to a fresh life and don’t have
time to pay attention to campus trends.

College juniors and
seniors also have more social activities. They enjoy the availability of
communication While searching for post graduate jobs.
Another
characteristic of college mobile consumption is that college students in big
cities tend to use mobiles more ofen than those from smaller towns.
Short messages have
become a new way to express one’s love to his or her lover. Especially for some
timid guys. With mobile phones , they can say love to girls who may be in their
hearts for quite a long time
In a random
survey, 19 students in one graduating class in the Foreign language
Department at FAC admitted to using mobile phone whereas only 8 students in
Anhui University have
Some kinds of mobile phones popular
with college students

Most students with
mobiles are “pure” consumers with no incomes. They rely on parents to provide
them with the high-tech toy.
80% of college
students say their parents pay for their mobile phone expenses. Only 8% say they
earn the money through a part time job or scholarships.
This is very
natural, compared with adults, young people are more concerned with and
responsible to all kinds of vogue in society.
And as the rapid
development of science and technology has made mobile phone a very common method
of communication, college student won’t stand aside.
Mobile phones have
brought us convenience , but they also bring many troubles and reflect our moral
level.
Scene 1: In the library, quiet with only
steps and sounds of reading books ,suddenly, the ring of someone’s mobile phone
broke the peace .Ten minutes later, It rang again. Everyone in the library
stared at that guy.
Scene 2:In the class, a few students are
sending messages in spite of the teacher’s being in the front, and suddenly a
specially ring rises...The teacher nodded his
head.
Scene3:At dusk, in the dormitory,
without talking ,everyone is expressing his or her feelings by
message.
Scene 4:In the street in the campus ,two
bicycles collided, both guys were too busy sending messages to pay attention to
others.
By a research in Xiamen University, the
quality and appearance of mobiles are the first two considerations of the students . The
service after sell has also become a focus , Therefore, 76.3% of the students
possessing mobile phones choose to buy mobile phones in special
stores.
As for the expense ,54.2% choose to
spend 1000-2000 yuan on it.It indicates that college students are not in persuit
of expensive ones without consideration.
Among all the students ,4.9% choose to
buy mobile phones on line. It shows that college students are easy to accept new
things and keep up with new trends.
From the brands chosen by students
,Nokia ,Motor and Sansung are the three most popular mobile phones in the
campus.
About the function, most students say
they use mobile phones to express their feelings more than meet the needs of
work.
From the research paper above , we can
see that nowadays college students pay more attention to show their personality and stress more on the
quality and service.
Although as a new high-tech invention, the mobile phone
really has brought us great changes and convenience in communication but without
exception it also brings a lot of social
problems.
First, it seems more convenient to
communicate with others, But in fact, the chances of talking face to face
with each other are greatly
reduced. And it may result in the
feeling of distance between people. To us college students, the four years in
the campus are precious for us to practise our ability to communicate with
others. Numerous short messages may make us lose some kinds of chances of
practice.
Second, there will be another way for
some information harmful to be accepted. We college students sometimes are not
mature and sensible enough to identify them and thus will probably be
influenced.
Third, the expense of a mobile phone and
every month’s cost of messages and phones are a burden not light to a family,
especially for those who come from poor areas. And sometimes we are persuaded to
compare with others which will make the burden
heavier.
And another drawback is that short
messages form an imaginary world. We make friends that we may have never seen
through short messages . Since our ability of self-control is not enough, we may
be absorbed in a world isolated from the real world.Yet we may influenced by
some advertisements without consideration.
Many students are always too busy
sending short messages in the class to listen to what the teacher is
teaching.
Though it is hard to say whether the
influence mobile phones have made in our life is good or not , we are following
the trends unconsciously. So what we should do is to keep calm
and
self-control
